Two child-headed households in Ledig have received newly built homes through a partnership between the North West Department of Economic Development, Environment, Conservation and Tourism (DEDECT) and Sun City as part of the Nelson Mandela Day programme.
The handover formed part of the annual 67 Minutes initiative, which encourages individuals and organisations to dedicate time to community service. However, MEC for Economic Development, Environment, Conservation and Tourism, Bitsa Lenkopane, emphasised that Mandela Day should represent a lifelong commitment to restoring dignity and improving lives, rather than being a once-off event.
Lenkopane described the housing project as a reflection of this year’s Mandela Day message of bringing hope, creating lasting change and making a meaningful impact in communities. She noted that the partnership between the North West Government and Sun City had delivered more than just houses; it had restored dignity to vulnerable families and demonstrated the value of collaboration between government, the private sector and other stakeholders.
Sun City Sustainability Manager Tebogo Mokgajane said the resort embraces the principle that every day should be Mandela Day. He explained that the beneficiaries were identified following a review of DEDECT’s beneficiary register, with priority given to child-headed households in urgent need of assistance.
Mokgajane added that Sun City continues to invest in community development initiatives throughout the year, supporting vulnerable households beyond Mandela Day. He expressed hope that the collaboration would continue to expand, ensuring that more families receive the dignity and security of a permanent home.
