The South African government has convened a high-level security cluster meeting at the Union Buildings in Pretoria to address ongoing anti-migrant demonstrations and growing concerns over potential xenophobic violence.

The meeting brings together several ministers and senior officials tasked with law enforcement, security coordination, and social cohesion policy development.

According to the Government Communications and Information Systems (GCIS), discussions are focused on finalising a national action plan aimed at combating racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia, and related intolerance, while also addressing broader challenges linked to illegal immigration.

Government officials have also initiated diplomatic engagements with neighbouring countries to examine underlying factors contributing to migration pressures across the region.

Last week, Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni warned that various groups, including alleged foreign actors, may be exploiting public concerns around illegal immigration to incite instability and violence.

The current meeting also includes representatives from political parties and civil society groups involved in recent demonstrations calling for stricter immigration enforcement.

Authorities say the discussions aim to establish clearer guidelines for protest conduct while strengthening government responses to illegal immigration and safeguarding social cohesion.
