South Africa’s flag continues to be raised high as different national teams make their way through to continental and international tournaments.
The latest team to do so is Banyana Banyana, who will compete at the 2026 Women Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), in Morocco.
Banyana defeated the Democratic Republic of Congo 2-1 in the final round of qualifiers to book themselves a spot at WAFCON.
The Deputy Minister of Sports, Peace Mabe gave them their flowers and hailed their hard work.
“Their achievement cements their status as a symbol of excellence, resilience and unity for the nation.
This qualification reflects our country’s unwavering belief in the potential of women athletes.
Banyana have proven that with discipline, planning and support, South Africa can produce teams that compete and win at the highest level,” said Mabe.
Her sentiments were echoed by the President of South African Football Association (SAFA) Danny Jordaan, who revealed that they would be meeting with Head Coach, Dr Desiree Ellis to map a way forward.
Jordaan warned against complacency, adding that Banyana would treat this qualification with the utmost respect and prepare for it accordingly.
The team has qualified for WAFCON’s qualifiers and has the chance to lift the trophy after being crowned champions back in 2022.
They will have another go at from the 17th of March to the 3rd of April 2026.
According to Deputy Minister Mabe, their qualification is more than just about football, but it is about representing South Africa and national pride.
