HAITU, the Workers Indaba Trade Union, is expected to march to the Gauteng Department of Health offices to demand permanent employment for health workers.

To demand an end to exploitation of health workers, they will march to the office of Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi with the Independent Liberation and Allied Workers Union.

The organisations are calling for the abolition of temporary contracts or the employment of nurses through labour brokers for more than three months.

Bafana Tshabalala, chairperson of HAITU Gauteng, claims that Covid-19 contracts are ongoing employment.

“The administration wants to discharge those who are employed under contract despite the fact that there is already a severe lack of healthcare staff in the system. Thus, we are requesting that all employees who were hired through Covid contracts be given long-term positions inside the system,” said Tshabalala in a statement.
