The department of Correctional Services says it is investigating circumstances that led to the stabbing of Chris Hani’s killer Janusz Walus.

The department confirmed in a statement that Walus, who was stabbed by another inmate from the same housing unit, is in stable condition.

Spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo says the healthcare team is attending to Walus and every necessary care will be afforded to him.

This comes as Walus was due to be released on parole after serving a life sentence for the assassination of SACP leader Chris Hani in 1993.

Earlier the Department of Home Affairs issued a directive that Walus would serve the rest of his sentence in South Africa.

The ANC and its alliance partners SACP, COSATU and MK Liberation War Veterans, are scheduled to march to Kgosi Mampuru prison in Pretoria against the release of Walus who was granted parole by the  Constitutional Court last week.
