The Hawks have arrested two suspects in Mbombela after they were allegedly found in possession of explosive devices, including 50 electric detonators.

The arrests followed an intelligence-driven operation on Friday involving the Hawks, police, private security companies and anti-illicit mining groups.

A 37-year-old undocumented foreign national and a 36-year-old South African were taken into custody during the operation.

According to Mpumalanga Hawks spokesperson Magonseni Nkosi, the suspects were allegedly found with explosives estimated to be worth R130,000.

The vehicle allegedly used by the suspects, along with their cellphones, was also seized as investigators work to establish the source and intended use of the explosives.

The suspects face charges relating to alleged contraventions of the Explosives Act and Immigration Act.

The arrests form part of ongoing law-enforcement efforts targeting criminal activities linked to illicit mining and the illegal movement of explosives.

Authorities are expected to conduct further investigations to determine whether the suspects are connected to broader criminal networks involved in the supply or use of explosives.

The Hawks have urged the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to law-enforcement authorities as investigations continue.
