The Portfolio Committee on Higher Education and Training, has welcomed the submission of the names of the panel members appointed to oversee the selection and recommendations of board chairpersons for the Sector Education and Training Authorities (SETAs).
This after the Department’s Minister, Dr Nobuhle Nkabane appeared before the committee to respond to questions related to the board chairpersons, following public outcry over alleged political interference.
Committee Chairperson, Tebogo Letsie said the Minister’s submission of the names is long overdue. “We are pleased that sanity has prevailed and that the Minister has now compllied with this requirement. The committee believes this disclosure should have occurred from the outset,” said Letsie.
The panel, as listed by Nkabane, comprises of Advocate Terry Motaung who is the chairperson, Asisipho Solani, Nelisiwe Semane, Mabuza Ngubane and Rhulani Ngwenya. Furthermore, Letsie reiterated their committement to ensure accountability and transparency in institutions funded by public
resources.
“We are dealing with public institutions funded through parliamentary appropriations. It was therefore baffling that the committee had to strongly remind the Minister of such a basic accountability requirement in our democratic governance system,” explained Letsie. Some of the committee members have recommended that the panel be called to appear before it as soon as possible.
