Immigration-related tensions escalated into unrest in Soweto and Durban on Thursday, with 14 vehicles reportedly burned as clashes and protests intensified.

In Soweto, southwest of Johannesburg, clashes were reported between South African residents and foreign nationals, including foreign shop owners. Gunshots were reportedly fired during the confrontation, while several vehicles were set alight.

In Durban, tensions also escalated around the Home Affairs refugee offices, where protesters gathered over immigration-related concerns.

Police used tear gas to disperse protesters as vehicles were set alight. Firefighters were deployed to the area to respond to the fires, while police advised foreign nationals at the Home Affairs facility to leave for their own safety.

The unrest comes amid heightened tensions surrounding immigration, asylum applications and the enforcement of South Africa’s immigration laws.

Some community members supporting the protests said they believe stricter enforcement of immigration laws is needed and that South African citizens should be prioritised.

The incidents in Soweto and Durban have raised concerns over public safety and the impact of immigration-related tensions on local communities.

Authorities are expected to provide further details on the incidents, including arrests, injuries and the extent of property damage.
