The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) said 115 motorists were arrested for drunk driving between 28 April and 4 May 2025.

According to the JMPD, this took place during its ongoing efforts to enhance road safety in the city.

The department said this figure highlights the persistent dangers posed by impaired driving and underscores the JMPD’s commitment to tackling this issue head-on.

“While the JMPD is actively working to enforce traffic laws and apprehend offenders, road safety is a shared responsibility. We urge the public to make responsible decisions, avoid driving after consuming alcohol, and report any instances of suspected drunk driving. Your cooperation is crucial in making our roads safer for everyone,” said JMPD Chief of Police, Commissioner Patrick Jaca.

He further emphasised that driving under the influence of alcohol is a serious offence with potentially devastating consequences.

“We urge all individuals to make responsible choices and to utilize alternative transportation options if they have consumed alcohol,” pleaded Jaca.

The suspects are expected to appear at several magistrates’ courts across the city this week.
