The Johannesburg Emergency Management Services (EMS) is on high alert as heavy rain continues to drench the city on Monday, prompting concerns over severe thunderstorms and localised flooding. As the South African Weather Service (SAWS) issues a Yellow Level 2 warning for Gauteng, residents are urged to prepare for dangerous weather conditions.
SAWS reported that the thunderstorms could lead to heavy downpours, resulting in the flooding of low-lying areas, bridges, and settlements. This weather phenomenon is attributed to tropical moisture that has settled over the region, affecting not only Gauteng but also the extreme north-western parts of Mpumalanga and the western and central areas of Limpopo.
In light of the inclement weather, Robert Mulaudzi, spokesperson for Johannesburg EMS, has urged motorists to remain vigilant. “It’s raining in most parts of the city of Johannesburg, most roads are wet and slippery. Our motorists are urged to exercise caution while driving, extend a safe following distance and try and avoid crossing flooded roads,” he advised. His comments reinforce the importance of safety during potentially hazardous conditions.
As the storm progresses, effects such as large amounts of small hail and excessive lightning are anticipated, further heightening the risk for those commuting or travelling in affected areas. The EMS is advising the public to stay informed, adhere to safety alerts, and avoid unnecessary travel if possible.
