The North West Department of Education has provided five mobile classrooms at Zamukulunga Public School in Jouberton, outside Klerksdorp, as a temporary solution to the school’s classroom shortages caused by the renovations at the school.

This comes after parents of learners, particularly those in the foundation phase, complained that their children were not adjusting to the newly implemented platooning system, which required grade 1 to grade 3 learners to attend school in shifts.

In June the school informed parents that, due to a lack of classrooms, their children would begin attending in shifts until the school’s renovations were completed.

However, on Tuesday, on the school’s reopening day, parents were relieved to see mobile classrooms at the schools.

Vincent Lande said. “Finally, our children have classrooms; even our emotions have improved; the children are happy today, and we are happy; the teachers appear happy as well; everything has returned to normal”.

School Governing Body member Refiloe Ramarowe said safety was a major concern and that they too were relieved that the school has a solution.

“It has always been a concern for us as SGB; we were anxious because we wondered which child would be lost once more. We also worried that the parents would be upset with us; even though their priority was the protection of the children, we also did not know what to do,” she said.

The North West Department of Education spokesperson Mphata Molokwana said the renovation project is expected to be completed by February 2024.
