It has been a long day for Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema, who has spent hours in the dock at the East London Magistrates’ Court as the long-awaited judgment in his firearm discharge case draws near. The court proceedings have captivated the public, with all eyes on the controversial figure who is no stranger to the legal fray.

Presiding over the case, Magistrate Twanet Olivier has diligently reviewed the evidence presented throughout the trial, a case that has been unfolding for several years. As the testimonies are painstakingly recapped, Malema’s composure remains unyielding, even as the courtroom fills with anticipation over the outcome of this pivotal moment.

Malema, alongside his personal protection officer Adrian Snyman, faces serious charges relating to breaches of the Firearms Control Act. The accusations stem from a rally in Mdantsane in 2018, where it is alleged that Malema discharged a rifle towards a crowd of supporters, an act that has since sparked considerable legal scrutiny and public debate over safety and responsibility.

As the clock ticks, Magistrate Olivier emphasises the importance of a thorough examination of the evidence. “I need to repeat evidence and certain aspects in cross-examination, which will be relevant when the court arrives at its reasoning and finding. So I cannot skip any portion,” she stated. She cautioned that this comprehensive review would take several hours to conclude, delaying the final judgment.

As the proceedings entered the night, it became clear that the judgment would not be handed down today, leaving both the accused and their supporters in a limbo of anxious anticipation. The court will determine whether it can continue past standard hours or reconvene tomorrow to deliver the official verdict.

This case has not only placed Malema at the centre of legal discourse but has also ignited discussions surrounding the responsibilities of public figures and the implications of their actions in the public realm.
