South Africa’s Junior Springboks have cemented their status as a dominant force in age-group rugby after defeating France 16-5 in the World Rugby U20 Championship final in Tbilisi on Saturday.
The victory saw the South African side successfully defend the title they won in Italy last year, securing their third junior world crown after previous triumphs in 2012 and 2025.
The final proved to be a demanding test of resilience, with a lightning storm delaying kick-off and adding another challenge for both teams. When play eventually got under way, France brought a powerful and physical approach that pushed the Junior Springboks throughout the contest.
South Africa held a narrow 6-0 advantage at half-time but were forced into a defensive battle after the break as France launched repeated attacks. The Junior Boks stood firm, producing a disciplined defensive performance to protect their lead and claim the championship.
Head coach Kevin Foote praised his players for their composure and determination under pressure, saying the squad’s unity was central to their success.
“The story of this team has been that they never give up,” Foote said, highlighting the impact of substitutes who provided vital energy during the closing stages.
Captain Siphosethu Mnebelele, who was also part of last year’s winning squad, said the team’s connection and commitment to one another played a key role in their achievement.
“We talk about giving love on defence, giving love on attack and doing it for the guy next to you,” Mnebelele said.
The Junior Springboks will return home on Monday to celebrate a memorable tournament campaign that has added another chapter to South Africa’s proud rugby history.
