The Klerksdorp magistrates court released on warning eight suspected gang members who were arrested last week on various offenses including public violence and malicious damage to property at the City of Matlosana Local Municipality.

The group was arrested on Wednesday following an incident in which they allegedly stormed Matlosana municipal offices demanding jobs. It is further alleged that after being told that there were no vacant posts, they started throwing chairs and insulting the HR manager and also damaged municipal properties.

The court has however said the state has a weak case as it could not link the group to all the charges levelled against them.

The group which spoke in the presence of their legal representative expressed disappointment following their arrest but said they were happy with the conclusion of the court.

Group leader Oupa Mpedi said they were all business people and happy that the court came to that conclusion.

“We are happy that the court released us on bail, we are businessmen and have families and we had a meeting with the mayor and the meeting was approached and scheduled for that date,” he said.
