According to Bulelwa Ganyaza, a spokesman for the Chris Hani District Municipality, disaster management teams were trying to evacuate inhabitants of the Silvertown informal community who were affected by the water.
A dam wall bursting has previously been suggested as the cause of the flooding. The infrastructure of the dam, according to Ganyaza, was unharmed.
“When the dam is fully operational, water automatically flows via spillways. The district is able to reassure the locals that the dam’s infrastructure is still in tact.”
Speaking on behalf of the Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality, Lonwabo Kowa indicated that no fatalities had been recorded and that the extent of the damage was still being evaluated.
“In Komani, heavy rains have resulted in flooding and overflow of the Komani River in certain sections. This occurred in the wee hours of Wednesday, having tremendous impact on the neighbourhood and traffic, ” he added.
The crisis management team helped to evacuate individuals in danger as floods mostly struck low-lying neighborhoods.
The emergency management team is determining the extent of the damage, while traffic officials are keeping an eye on the situation, regulating traffic, and offering other routes.
