Eskom’s Kusile Power Station Unit 6 in Mpumalanga, has successfully entered commercial operation and bolstered the national grid with 800MW.

The power utility described this as a significant milestone and an indication of its commitment to the turnaround plan of curbing load-shedding.

Eskom Group CEO, Dan Marokane expressed satisfaction that the unit returned to service within the planned timeframe.

“This milestone not only completes the Kusile build programme but also reinforces Eskom’s commitment to restoring energy security, enhancing grid stability, and investing in infrastructure that supports South Africa’s long-term economic growth.

Since its synchronisation in March, unit 6 has consistently met performance benchmarks, contributed to grid reliability, and helped meet electricity demand 97% of the time,” said Marokane.

He adds that the return of Kusile’s unit 6 combined with the Medupi Power Station’s Unit 4 which became operational in July this year, will contribute significantly to the country’s electricity supply.

According to Marokane, the two stations were designed for an operational lifespan of approximately 50 years.

Despite the milestone, efforts to expand the country’s renewable energy mix are ongoing, as part of Eskom’s strategy to strengthen the grid and reduce emissions.

Meanwhile, Electricity and Energy Minister Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa has commended the successful completion of Kusile Unit 6.

“This significant milestone marks a pivotal advancement of South Africa’s journey towards securing a sustainable and resilient energy future for South Africa and the region.

This achievement is a clear demonstration of the government’s commitment to energy security, noting that energy is an engine and strategic driver for economic recovery and development critical for job creation and alleviation of poverty and inequality in our country.

We extend our deepest gratitude to the engineers, contractors, and all stakeholders involved in ensuring that we finally reach this monumental accomplishment,” said Ramokgopa in a statement.
