ANC KwaZulu-Natal provincial chairperson Sboniso Duma says having former President Jacob Zuma as a delegate at the ANC’s Policy and Elective Conference will not interfere with the organisation’s work and programme
Duma was speaking to journalists on the sidelines of the 55th ANC Elective Conference in Nasrec, Joburg on Saturday.
Duma said Zuma will not cause any problems and will be kept inline and added that his presence was critical.
“He is (Zuma) the branch delegate, he has been elected by his branch. He qualifies to be here so he is going to follow the line, he is going to participate (in the conference).
“He is the heritage of the ANC like former President Thabo Mbeki so we have to tap from their wisdom. So from time to time even the National Executive Committee must lean in their direction. We must also embrace that,” said Duma..
Commenting on the fact that President Cyril Ramaphosa and Zuma publicly shook hands after the conference was adjourned on Saturday evening, Duma said: “We are also glad that we shook hands with the predecessor and the incumbent. Our analysis is that we will deliver a smooth sailing conference.”
On the issue of the delegates, who tried to disrupt the meeting on Friday, Duma said that the disruptions were bound to happen because the delegates are not satisfied by many burning issues.
“I think for our people it’s an issue of unemployment, the issue of inequality, the issue of the State Bank which hasn’t been implemented by this current leadership. So people have been waiting for it, and the issues of 1994… we got political power and no economic (power)”.
