Disaster management teams across KwaZulu-Natal are on high alert as the province grapples with relentless heavy rainfall and a snowfall warning that coincides with the Easter weekend. Residents and visitors are advised to stay updated as the South African Weather Service (SAWS) amplifies warnings regarding impending weather conditions that could disrupt normal activities.
The SAWS has issued a stark warning about significant rainfall that is expected to sweep through various districts, particularly impacting eThekwini, iLembe, uMgungundlovu, Ugu, and the Harry Gwala districts. Moreover, widespread showers are predicted for areas including uThukela, Amajuba, Harry Gwala, uMzinyathi, iLembe, King Cetshwayo, and uMgungundlovu—a comprehensive alert that calls for vigilance among residents.
As the rains continue to fall, many roads around eThekwini and its surroundings have experienced flooding. Despite these conditions, officials from KwaZulu-Natal’s Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) have reported that no major incidents have been linked to the extreme weather thus far. However, the situation remains fluid, and authorities are urging local communities to exercise caution and prepare for potential emergencies.
The heavy showers, coupled with the harsh possibility of snowfall, add to the urgency of preparedness among residents as they go into the holiday weekend. Communities in affected regions are being encouraged to monitor local news reports and heed safety advice from disaster management teams to mitigate the risks associated with severe weather.
