The much-anticipated Soweto derby Nedbank Cup Final is set to take place on Saturday, 10 May, at the iconic Moses Mabhida Stadium. With tickets sold out, all eyes are on the fierce clash between arch rivals Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates, making it a pivotal event in South African football.
Law enforcement authorities in KwaZulu-Natal have confirmed their full preparedness for this highly charged encounter. Major General Phumelele Makoba, the Deputy Provincial Commissioner responsible for large-scale events, expressed confidence during a state of readiness press briefing that significant measures have been put in place to ensure the safety and enjoyment of spectators, players, and officials alike.
“We want to assure South African football lovers that police have put sufficient plans in place to safeguard spectators, players, officials, and all VIPs who will grace the Saturday soccer spectacle,” Makoba said. The area surrounding the stadium has been designated as a “red zone”, meaning only individuals holding valid matchday tickets will be allowed near the venue.
To further enhance security, police will enforce strict access control to prevent the entrance of unauthorised personnel. Makoba warned that anyone caught selling tickets, be they fake or genuine, will face immediate arrest. She stressed the importance of fans ensuring they only purchase tickets from legitimate sources.
In light of past concerns regarding overcrowding and fake ticket sales, law enforcement has taken proactive steps to allay these worries. “Our operational plan extends beyond the stadium. Public safety is paramount, and we will monitor the situation closely,” Makoba added.
In addition to ensuring the safety of attendees, the authorities are keen on preventing potential disruptions. They have issued warnings against inciting violence, blocking roads, or engaging in any form of lawlessness. Makoba noted that there would be consequences for those who choose to disregard these advisories.
Traffic management is another key focus for the event. Plans are already in place to manage congestion effectively, ensuring that the flow of vehicles remains uninterrupted. Certain routes will be fully closed as a precautionary measure, and law enforcement will have officials on the ground to monitor and facilitate smooth transit for both fans and local residents.
