The Border Management Authority (BMA) has informed travellers that three Lesotho ports of entry to South Africa have been closed due to the persistent snowfall and the conditions leading to them becoming unsafe to enter.
The BMA said the affected ports include Sani Pass and Boesmansnek in KwaZulu-Natal and Monontsha in the Free State.
“Given the situation, the BMA and stakeholders operating at the port, have decided to close Sani Pass, Boesmansnek and Monontsha ports of entry for operations today (Saturday) until further notice.
This precaution is taken to ensure the safety of travellers, tourists, and officials, as the current conditions pose a significant danger,” said BMA spokesperson, Memme Mogotsi.
Travellers have been advised to use the Fickbsburg, Caledonspoort, Makhaleng and Maseru Ports of Entry as an alternative to entering Lesotho.
Mogotsi added that the decision was made in collaboration with other
stakeholders operating at the affected locations, to ensure the safety of travellers, tourists, and officials amid dangerous weather conditions.
Meanwhile, the Tugela and Wilge Plazas in KwaZulu-Natal remain closed due to snowfall on the N3 in the province.
Authorities in the province remain on high alert as the South Africa Weather Service issued a level 8 warning for further disruptive snow.
