The Department of Health in Limpopo has confirmed that two people tested positive for cholera in the Vhembe and Capricorn Districts, respectively.
The patients who are both Zimbabwean nationals presented cholera symptoms upon their return to South Africa from the festive holidays back home.
It is reported that the first case was confirmed in the Musina sub-district where a 43-year man has since been discharged from a local hospital.
Another patient, a 27-year-old man, is in a stable condition in isolation at the Helen Franz Hospital in Capricorn after his admission on Thursday with abdominal cramps, diarrhea, and vomiting.
The department spokesperson Neil Shikwamabana said a local outbreak team has been activated to conduct further investigations.
“Our medical teams are closely monitoring the patient’s condition and providing necessary care to facilitate their recovery,” said Shikwamabana.
The department urges the public to be vigilant and maintain personal hygiene as cholera is primarily transmitted through contaminated food and water.
Last year more than 20 people lost their lives in Hammanskraal, north of Pretoria following the outbreak of the virus.
