Rise Mzansi MP Makashule Gana has been elected Chairperson of Parliament’s Impeachment Committee, which is investigating President Cyril Ramaphosa’s conduct in relation to the Phala Phala farm theft matter.

The Committee held its inaugural meeting on Monday, during which Gana was nominated alongside United Africans Transformation (UAT) President Wonderboy Mahlatsi. Following a vote, Gana secured 19 votes, while Mahlatsi received 12.

In his acceptance remarks, Gana welcomed the responsibility of leading the proceedings, stating that the Committee’s work had officially begun. He emphasised that matters within its control would be addressed accordingly, while other aspects would be handled by relevant bodies. He also thanked members for their participation in the process.

Gana further noted that the review of draft rules submissions would proceed in parallel with the Committee’s work to avoid unnecessary delays. He adjourned the meeting, indicating that further steps would be communicated to members in due course.

Rise Mzansi expressed confidence in Gana’s ability to lead the Committee impartially and without fear or favour.

However, the appointment has drawn criticism from uMkhonto weSizwe Parliamentary Leader Dr John Hlophe, who questioned the decision. He described it as a strategic move by the ANC to shield the President from accountability.

Despite his concerns, Hlophe maintained that the opposition would continue to pursue its mandate of ensuring accountability and promoting good governance in the process.
