Mamelodi Sundowns are the 2023/24 DStv Premiership champions after they annihilated a depleted Kaizer Chiefs team at the FNB stadium on Thursday evening.
The results confirmed Sundowns as the champions, despite six league matches remaining.
Tashreeq Matthews, Matias Esquivel, Lucas Ribeiro and Thembinkosi Lorch struck in the second half to ensure that the team cannot be overhauled at the top of the log.
Amakhosi, who endured the fourth defeat from their last five league matches, scored their consolation goal in the 85th minute when Mduduzi Shabalala converted from a penalty spot.
The Soweto giants are now rooted in eight position in the log on 33 points with just four games remaining before they close off their miserable season.
“I want to dedicate this victory, maybe even the victory is not enough, maybe the entire season to the chairman of this football club, Thlopie Motsepe. I run out of words, and I am getting emotional. In the good moments, he’s there, and in the bad moments, he’s there,” said an elated Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena after the match.
Meanwhile, Chiefs interim coach Cavin Johnson, is confident that the team will improve performance in their remaining games.
“We have to go back to the drawing board and there’s four games left. We have to really put up our socks because the Chiefs that you saw in the last 15 minutes is not the Chiefs I know,” said Johnson.
Amasandawana have now won the league title for the 14th time, more than any other side.
