For thousands of Grade 12 learners across the North West, the start of the National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations marks more than just the beginning of their final assessments. It signals the closing chapter of a journey that began in Grade 1 and the start of an uncertain but hopeful transition into adulthood.

As the Class of 2026 prepares to write its first examinations on Tuesday, 13 October, learners face a defining moment shaped by years of classroom lessons, friendships, personal sacrifices and dreams of a better future.

In the North West, 52,200 candidates have registered for the examinations, including 48,440 full-time learners and 3,760 part-time candidates. This represents an increase of 3,341 candidates compared with the previous year.

For many of these learners, matric represents the culmination of years of hard work and an opportunity to pursue further studies, enter the job market or follow other career ambitions.

However, as they prepare to leave the familiar environment of school, the moment also brings mixed emotions. The excitement of completing their schooling journey is accompanied by the pressure to perform well and uncertainty about what lies ahead.

Beyond the examination results, the end of matric marks a transition away from daily classroom routines, familiar teachers and friendships built over years of shared experiences.

The final weeks of school are therefore not only about revision and preparation but also about reflecting on how far learners have come and what they hope to achieve beyond the school gates.

Parents and teachers have played an important role in this journey, providing guidance, encouragement and support as learners navigate academic demands and prepare for their final examinations.

The North West Department of Education has also called on parents, teachers and communities to continue supporting candidates throughout the examination period.

As the Class of 2026 enters examination centres, learners are encouraged to draw on the lessons they have learnt throughout their school years, remain focused and approach each paper with determination.

For these learners, the final school bell may be approaching, but the future it heralds is only just beginning.
