A manhunt has been launched after the transport minister Sindisiwe Chikunga and her two VIP protectors were robbed off their belongings by armed robbers between N3 Vosloorus and Heidelberg in Gauteng.

It is reported that the minister and her security detail had stopped on the side of the highway in the early hours of Monday to change a punctured tyre, when three armed men emerged from the nearby bushes.

The protectors were robbed of two service pistols and other personal belongings while Chikunga was provided with alternative resources.

National police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe says they are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident that took place between Voslorus and Heidelberg.

“Members involved are receiving necessary support and counselling. A manhunt has since been launched following this unprecedented incident and to bring to book those responsible for this attack,” said Mathe.

Mathe added that the South African Police Service (SAPS) is committed to executing its mandate of protecting the executive of the country and the community at large.

“VIP protection is one of the key priority areas for the SAPS and has been undertaken with excellence over the years. We endeavor to continue to serve and protect whilst observing all aspects of our VIP protection protocols,” explained Mathe.

Meanwhile, the Department confirmed the robbery, describing it as an “unfortunate incident.”

“The tyres of the Minister’s car were punctured by spikes, bringing the car to a stop, enabling the criminals to rob the occupants of valuables.

Minister Chikunga remains committed to fulfilling her government responsibilities and is deeply grateful for the overwhelming support she has received from her fellow government colleagues and the people of South Africa,” the department said in a statement.

The statement added that the department is unable to provide further details as this is an ongoing police investigation.
