South Africa’s clubs registered mixed results during this weekend’s continental campaigns, CAF Champions League, and the Confederation Cup.
Orlando Pirates beat Lioli FC from Lesotho 3-0 at the Free State stadium in Bloemfontein on Saturday in the CAF Champions League preliminary round first leg, while Kaizer Chiefs went down 1-0 to Kabuscorp SCP in Luanda, Angola.
The Buccaneers displayed a commanding role against Lioli, controlling most aspects of the game, but however failed to score in the first half of the match.
Tshegofatso Mabasa opened the scoreboard in the 54th minute, and added another one three minutes later, to register his brace in the competition.
Lioli failed to recover from the two quick goals, and looked vulnerable most of the time, as they failed to control the ball.
Oswin Appolis took advantage of this, and sealed Pirates win in additional time, to ensure that the team has a three-goal advantage heading to the second leg, which will be played next weekend.
Meanwhile, Chiefs suffered a 1-0 loss to the Angolan side, Kabuscorp, in Luanda.
Chiefs went into the match following an impasse with coach, Nasreddine Nabi, who parted ways with the club ahead of Saturday’s encounter.
Substitute Julio Matondo’s second half strike ensured that the Angolan side goes into next weekend’s encounter at the FNB stadium, with a one goal advantage.
Amakhosi were left to ruin most of the goal scoring chances created in the first half, which they failed to convert.
Kabuscorp were reduced to ten men in the second half, but Amakhosi still failed to take advantage of the extra-man and finished the match with a disappointing 1-0 loss.
