The uMkhonto weSizwe party (MK) said it wants a full probe following a car accident that involved former president Jacob Zuma hit a state armoured vehicle that was transporting Zuma.
This after an alleged drunk driver collided with the vehicle, that was transporting Zuma from Nkandla to eShowe on Thursday afternoon.
No one was injured in the accident and Zuma was whisked away back to his home.
A 51-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving and reckless and negligent driving.
Zuma was enroute to eShowe to campaign for MK.
But the MK, which is Zuma new political home, said it suspect ‘foul play’ in the accident.
The party has quoted several incidents, where some opposing political leaders allegedly said, “Zuma would be in hospital before the elections.”
MK also alleged that the Zuma’s Presidential Protection Services has also been reduced and requested a full independent investigation in the matter.
Zuma’s daughter, Dudu Zuma-Sambudla, has also called for a probe, and accused government of compromising her father’s security.
“The ANC of (Cyril) Ramaphosa Is so evil.
They refuse to upgrade President Zuma’s fleet and to spite him.
They send President Zuma (FW) De Klerk’s old fleet of cars,” she said in her social media account.
She also appealed to the Minister of Police Bheki Cele to “investigate many public threats on the life of her father,” and questioned why Zuma’s cars haven’t been changed like other former President’s cars have been changed.
The accident comes a day after the Independent Electoral Commission disqualified Zuma to stand for a parliament seat for this year’s elections.
The police have confirmed the accident involving the former president.
“Police have arrested a 51-year-old man for drunken driving as well as on a charge of reckless and negligent driving.
The man’s motor vehicle collided with former President, Jacob Zuma’s official armoured state vehicle.
At the time of the collision, former President Zuma was in the vehicle with his protectors.
No one was injured including members of the Presidential Protection Services,” said police spokesperson, Brigadier Athlenda Mathe.
Mathe added that the former President was evacuated and taken to his residence.
Meanwhile, President Ramaphosa said he has been notified about his predecessor’s accident.
“I did hear about the unfortunate accident in KwaZulu-Natal involving the security detail of former president Jacob Zuma.
I was informed that there was no harm that befell him, he’s safe and the matter is now being investigated,” said Ramaphosa.
The driver is expected to appear before the Eshowe Magistrate Court on Tuesday.
