The uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MK Party) says its president, former president Jacob Zuma, is healthy and in good spirits after completing a routine medical check-up.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the party said Zuma had attended his scheduled medical examination on Tuesday.

“The President gets a full routine check-up twice a year. We hereby confirm that he is healthy and in good spirits,” the party said.

The statement follows reports that Zuma had been taken to a hospital in KwaZulu-Natal by ambulance after attending an event in Msinga in the Midlands.

The Witness reported that Zuma was admitted to hospital after reportedly becoming unwell following the event. His condition was not initially known.

The MK Party has, however, now sought to clarify concerns about Zuma’s health, saying there is no cause for concern.

The party said Zuma’s campaign programme would continue as planned.

“All Party communication is handled by the National Spokesperson, Cde Sifiso Mahlangu,” the statement said.

Zuma, who served as South Africa’s president from 2009 until his resignation in February 2018, remains the leader of the MK Party.

The party emerged as a significant political force in the 2024 national elections, particularly in KwaZulu-Natal, where Zuma continues to have a strong political presence.

The former president has previously been hospitalised for medical treatment. In August 2021, while serving a sentence at the Estcourt Correctional Centre, Zuma was admitted to an outside hospital for medical observation.

The latest statement from the MK Party does not provide details about the nature of the check-up or whether Zuma was admitted to hospital during the process.

It says only that he completed the examination and is healthy and in good spirits.

Zuma’s campaign programme is expected to continue accordingly.
