There is a new Speaker for the City of Tshwane. Mncedi Ndzwanana of the African Transformation Movement (ATM) has been chosen to fill the job.

Kholofelo Morudi, a speaker candidate for ActionSA, received only 37 votes, while Ndzwanana won 105 votes.

The ANC and the EFF-led coalition in council backed Ndzwanana. DA council members used the numbers 1-69 provided to each of them by the party to identify anyone who would vote against their candidate instead of placing an X next to them.

To make sure the party representatives could see which councillors supported their candidate, the councillors were ordered to cast their votes using the numbers assigned to them by the party.

The special council meeting on Monday lasted longer than 14 hours as a result of multiple adjournments and Johann Mettler, the municipal manager, requesting legal advice.
