Despite not being nominated by the ANC Johannesburg Region as its preferred candidate for the City of Johannesburg mayoral position, Dada Morero has made the party’s final shortlist of five candidates to be interviewed by the ANC’s top leadership.
The process, mandated by the ANC National Executive Committee, will culminate in the announcement of the ANC’s mayoral candidates for the 2026 Local Government Elections.
ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula previously said the party aimed to conclude an extensive public participation process that saw communities and key sectors nominate leaders to represent the movement in municipalities across South Africa.
Morero has been shortlisted alongside his deputy and ANC Johannesburg chairperson, Loyiso Masuku.
Newsnote has reliably learnt that three other candidates have also been interviewed: ANC Integrity Commission chairperson Frank Chikane, Johannesburg MMC for Economic Development Nomoya Mnisi, and former deputy minister Jabu Moleketi.
A few weeks ago, the ANC in Johannesburg did not nominate Morero, instead backing Masuku, Moleketi and Makhosi Ndlela.
Ndlela is the chairperson of the Section 79 Committee on Transport in the City of Johannesburg.
The ANC’s leadership is expected to conclude the interview process before deciding on its preferred candidate for the mayoral position.
