The case involving Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe, son of former Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe, and his co-accused Tobias Matonhodze has been postponed to next Tuesday following a brief appearance at the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday morning.

The pair face multiple serious charges, including attempted murder, pointing a firearm, possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, defeating the ends of justice relating to a missing firearm, and contraventions of the Immigration Act.

The charges stem from a February incident at the Mugabe family’s Hyde Park residence, where an employee was allegedly shot in the back.

State prosecutor Lufuno Maphiri says the matter is close to being finalised.

“We are almost 98% complete with plea negotiations. Unfortunately, we cannot proceed with the matter today as the senior public prosecutor will have to take a final decision,” he said.

“Unfortunately, he is not in the office as he is committed elsewhere.”

Defence lawyer Sinenhlanhla Mnguni echoed similar sentiments, expressing hope that the matter will be finalised when it returns to court on March 24.
