The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and other organisations involved in the planned nationwide shutdown received a harsh warning from President Cyril Ramaphosa that disorder and anarchy would not be tolerated.
On Monday, there will likely be a large-scale protest organised by the EFF and the South African Federation of Trade Unions (Saftu).
Ramaphosa stated at a speech at the Union Buildings in Tshwane that while the Constitution guarantees the right to protest, the only method to remove him from office would be by ballot, not by making an attempt to overthrow the government.
“Our democratic architecture does not include forcing people to behave the way you want them to, and I wanted to make it very clear that South Africa will not tolerate unrest or anarchy. We won’t let anyone do what they want here who wants to sow anarchy.”
The president issued a warning to the EFF that security personnel would not hold back in using force to repress anyone who violated another person’s rights.
According to Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, who echoed the president’s statements yesterday, there won’t be a nationwide shutdown on Monday.
She claims that the government is ready to handle any situation, nevertheless. She claims that the cabinet benefited greatly from the riots in July 2021. This time, according to Ntshaveni, the ministers are in agreement.
