The National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) has approved a 12.7% increase for Eskom electricity tariffs for 2025, which will be in effect from 01 April. The announcement follows Eskom’s initial 36.15% request for a period between 2025 to 2028. NERSA chairperson Thembani Bukula sought to assure the nation that due regulatory processes were conducted before the final decision was made. “Energy Regulator also conducted public hearings to solicit comments from interested and affected stakeholders. As a result, NERSA received more than 1200 written comments from stakeholders who raised concerns such as affordability, Eskom’s performance, and the impact of negotiated price agreements. NERSA has approved revenues of R384 610 million for the 2025/26 financial year, which translates to a percentage increase of 12.74%, R409 524 million for the 2026/27 financial year which translates to a percentage increase of 5.36% and revenues of R436 860 million for the 2027/28 financial year equal to a 6.19% increase,” said Bukula. He added that the rates decided upon are balanced with the needs of Eskom and the realities of consumers. Meanwhile, the Department of Electricity and Energy welcomed the regulator’s announcement with some conditions. “Whilst the approved tariff adjustment will place pressure on Eskom to stay the course with its investment strategy to strengthen and modernize its generation, transmission and distribution infrastructure, the Ministry remains committed to working closely with Eskom to drive greater efficiency gains. This will ensure that operational improvements and cost reductions contribute to the utility’s long-term financial sustainability while safeguarding the affordability and reliability of electricity supply,” read the Department’s statement.
