The National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) has announced the registration of 144 generation facilities between July and September this year.
The registered facilities represent an estimated investment of R78 billion.
Gauteng led the increase, with 47 new generation facilities attracting R343 million in investment, while the North West recorded six facilities valued at more than R6 million.
The registrations included 139 solar photovoltaic (PV) facilities, three wind projects, one battery energy storage system and one co-generation facility.
“Solar photovoltaic (PV) technology was the top choice for electricity generation in the second quarter, driven by South Africa’s abundant sunshine, which benefits both small- and large-scale energy projects,” said NERSA spokesperson Charles Hlabela.
“NERSA has demonstrated improved efficiency in processing registration applications for generation facilities. NERSA processed 144 applications in an average of just nine working days, marking a notable improvement on the previous quarter of the 2025/26 financial year, when 181 applications were handled in an average of 10 working days.”
Of the registered facilities, 68 will connect to municipal distribution networks, delivering a combined capacity of 50 megawatts (MW). The remaining 76 facilities will connect to the Eskom network, contributing a substantial 3,079 MW of capacity.
