North West MEC for Education Viola Motsumi has urged parents and guardians to closely monitor the behaviour of learners who were not promoted to the next grade in the 2025 academic year.

Motsumi emphasized that parental support and guidance are crucial during the festive period, noting that learners who did not meet progression requirements may experience emotional distress, frustration, or noticeable behavioural changes.

“Denial of accepting results sometimes leads to emotional depression. In some cases, children begin to behave differently due to the pressure they are experiencing,” the MEC cautioned.

Schools across the province have issued progress reports for learners from Grade R to Grade 11. While many learners were promoted, a number did not meet the necessary requirements to advance to the next grade.

The MEC advised parents and guardians to act promptly if they observe unusual behaviour, encouraging them to seek assistance from faith-based leaders, counsellors, or other support structures within their communities.

Learners experiencing emotional distress or depression related to academic performance can access support through the Childcare toll-free line at 0800 055 555.

Meanwhile, MEC Motsumi is expected to officially release the 2025 National Senior Certificate (matric) results on Tuesday, 13 January 2026.
