The North West man who became the first athlete to win a gold medal at the Special Olympics held in Berlin, Germany last month is finally back home and intends to build on his success towards a better future, he said.
Goitsemodimo Mosepele, 19, spoke to our news team at his parents’ home at Ikageng Informal Settlement outside Rustenburg.
Mosepele, who won in the 25-meter freestyle swimming competition said he was intimidated by his competitors, some of whom said he won’t make it. But he kept his head high and gave it his best shot, he said.
He is also hopeful for his future and said he will be able to assist his family and get them out of poverty. His family on the other hand is grateful for his success and have said they have high hopes for him.
Team SA won a total of 49 medals in the competition that featured some 7 000 athletes from 180 countries all of them with some form of physical and or intellectual disability.
