Following a successful and thrilling experience of the popular two-day Mahika Mahikeng Cultural Festival at the Mmabatho Stadium in Mahikeng in December last year, North West Premier Lazarus Mokgosi has announced that the provincial government has established a research report which seeks to assess the overall event.

The research will determine the success of the event, its reach, the economic impact and how it benefited small businesses, as well as point out areas of improvement.

According to Mokgosi, a budget of over R18 million was set aside for the event.

“The budget covered the stage, marketing campaigns, accommodation and other related costs.

A service provider was appointed to provide management services in relation to this event and was responsible for subcontracting and payments thereof,” said Mokgosi.

The Premier also revealed that a report by the South African Cultural Observatory (SACO) highlighted that the event had an economic impact of R40.3 million while creating about 260 job opportunities at the time.

According to Mokgosi, the research report will provide the Provincial Department of Arts and Culture a clear indication of where it can improve and if it should expand the festival.

Mahika Mahikeng is dubbed the North West’s pride aimed at showcasing the province’s attractive tourism and creativity.

It not only affords national celebrities a stage to entertain attendees, but it also gives local and emerging talent a chance to demonstrate their creativity.

Mokgosi told members of the Legislature that the research of the event will be made available and called for inputs, especially regarding the financing model.

He believes it is a significant point of engagement, as many events or projects stall due to financial constraints.
