Gauteng police have launched a manhunt, following the brutal killing of an e-hailing driver and injury to two other people outside the Maponya Mall in Soweto, in a suspected taxi violence related incident.
The driver was shot, and torched inside his car by several attackers, believed to be taxi drivers from the taxi rank inside the mall.
Another e-hailing driver and a passerby also sustained gunshot wounds during the attack, and the driver’s vehicle was also torched by the attackers.
According to videos circulating on social media, the attackers are seen attacking the drivers, damaging their vehicles before setting the driver and his vehicle on fire.
“According to information at hand, an e-hailing vehicle was seen stopping at the entrance when about four men approached the driver and shot at him before torching the vehicle.
“Another vehicle which was nearby was shot at and the driver managed to flee, and his vehicle was also torched.
“It was later discovered that the driver and another passerby sustained gunshot wounds and were taken to hospital,” said police spokesperson, Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi.
Nevhuhulwi said a case of murder, attempted murder with two counts and arson has since been opened for further investigations.
Police and Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department are on the scene to monitor the situation.
