The Speaker of the National Assembly, Thoko Didiza, has officially announced the members who will serve on the Phala Phala Impeachment Committee.

This development follows a ruling by the Constitutional Court, which found Parliament’s previous vote on the Section 89 report to be invalid and unconstitutional.

Political parties were required to submit nominations by 22 May 2026, although the African National Congress (ANC) missed the deadline and only submitted its list over the weekend.

The committee comprises representatives from multiple political parties as follows:

The African National Congress (ANC) nominees include DE Mpapane, X Nqola, MS Lekganyane, AF Muthambi, CM Dugmore, DR Direko, BM Maneli, MG Mahlaule, LS Makhubela, and KJ Maimela (alternate).

The Democratic Alliance (DA) is represented by G Michalakis, BB Nodada, Adv G Breytenbach, KL Khakhau, and NK Sharif.

The uMkhonto weSizwe Party has nominated MJ Hlophe, SMN Mokoena-Zondi, and K Litchfield-Tshabalala.

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) members include JS Malema and OMC Maotwe.

Other party representatives include NM Hadebe (Inkatha Freedom Party), MV Daniels (Patriotic Alliance), WW Wessels (Freedom Front Plus), LM Ngobeni and RAP Trollip (ActionSA), SN Swart (African Christian Democratic Party), NLS Kwankwa (United Democratic Movement), SM Gana (Rise Mzansi), MA Maimane (Build One South Africa), V Zungula (African Transformation Movement), I Ismail-Moosa (Al-Jama-ah), F Adams (National Coloured Congress), and LW Mahlatsi (United Africans Transformation).

According to Parliament, both the GOOD Party and the Pan Africanist Congress (PAC) have opted not to participate in the committee, citing potential conflicts of interest due to their limited parliamentary representation and executive involvement.

Meanwhile, Speaker Didiza has referred the Constitutional Court judgment on the Phala Phala matter to Parliament’s subcommittee on the Review of Rules. The subcommittee will now consider and process the necessary amendments to the National Assembly’s rules.
