The Ad Hoc Committee investigating allegations of criminal infiltration, political interference and corruption within South Africa’s criminal justice system has received an update on efforts to secure the appearance of key witness Brown Mogotsi.
The committee is meeting virtually to discuss the anticipated testimony of several witnesses, including former Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) head Robert McBride and private investigator Paul O’Sullivan.
Briefing Members of Parliament, the committee’s Evidence Leader, Advocate Nomarn Arendse, outlined a number of challenges confronting the inquiry. He revealed that Mogotsi has raised concerns regarding his lack of legal representation as well as fears for his personal security.
According to Arendse, these concerns have led the committee to agree to an initial virtual consultation with Mogotsi, while discussions continue on the possibility of an in-person appearance before Parliament.
“We have Brown Mogotsi, who is now scheduled to consult with us on Wednesday,” Arendse said. “He previously raised issues around not having legal representation and also some security concerns.”
