Orlando Pirates have trashed Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila 4-1 at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban, to advance to the round of 16 of the Nedbank Cup.
Pirates fielded three new signings Andre de Jong and Mpho Chabatsane, and Melusi Buthelezi their first caps at the club.
The Buccaneers were the first to register their names in the score sheet in the tenth minute, when new recruit Jong converted from a penalty spot, after Oswin Appolis was brought down by Sithembiso Ngobe.
Last year’s finalists doubled their lead in the 17th minute when a long shot by Thalente Mbatha was deflected leaving Tshakhuma’s goalkeeper rooted on the spot.
Tshakhuma, who play in the ABC Motsepe League, scored their first goal in the 39th minute through Sithembiso Ngobe, with a well taken shot from the free kick, leaving Buthelezi without any chance, to make the score 2-1.
Halftime substitute Patrick Maswanganyi increased Pirates lead to 3-1, just five minutes into the game, to place the visitors in a comfortable lead.
Another substitute Sipho Mbule, who hasn’t featured for the Buccaneers since the Africa Cup of Nations, sealed his team’s victory when he got his name in the scoresheet in the 90th minute.
Meanwhile, at the Chatsworth Stadium on Friday night, Durban City beat Chippa United 3-2 on penalties following a 0-0 draw after 120 minutes.
Casric Stars beat Army Rocket 3-0 at the Olympia Park in Rustenburg.
The match between Golden Arrows and Orbit College FC was abandoned at the King Goodwill Zwelithini Stadium, Durban, due to bad weather.
The match will now be played at a date and time which will be announced by the organisers.
Arrows was leading 1-0 at halftime, but due to bad lighting in the pouring rain just before the start of the second half, the referee decided to abandon the match
Upington City shocked PSL outfit Magesi 5-4 on penalties after the match ended 0-0 after 120 minutes at the Mxolisi Dicky Jacobs Stadium, Upington.
Jacksa Spears beat Cardinals 4-2 at Goble Park in Bethlehem, while Sekhukhune United beat Highbury FC 1-0 at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, Gqeberha.
The draw for the round of 16 will be conducted on Wednesday in Randburg.
