Pitfalls to avoid when establishing New Year’s resolutions

The onset of the new year presents an ideal opportunity to establish resolutions and objectives for the upcoming twelve months. Life coach Wouter Molefe has shared several considerations to keep in mind during this period. Resolutions signify a commitment to self-improvement and personal development, encompassing the changes individuals aspire to implement in their lives.

In a recent interview with Newsnote, Molefe highlighted the significance of budgeting when formulating resolutions and setting goals. He noted that many individuals struggle to achieve their objectives because they set aspirations that exceed their financial means.

“When establishing your goals, it is essential to be pragmatic; you cannot aim for targets that are beyond your reach or affordability. It is crucial to take your budget into account when setting your goals,” he stated.

Molefe further pointed out that the influence of one’s social circle can hinder goal attainment. He encouraged individuals to be selective about their friends and to limit their social interactions. “The choice of your social circle is vital; you need companions who will inspire you to work diligently and achieve your goals. Surround yourself with those who motivate you, rather than those who may lead you astray,” Molefe advised.

A detrimental environment is one of the factors that can impede an individual’s ability to reach their goals, perform at a high level, or progress in their careers, often due to the negative atmosphere that can contribute to mental health issues. Molefe recommended that individuals ensure they are in a positive mental state when planning for the future.

“It is crucial to select environments conducive to goal-setting. If your surroundings are not supportive, seek out a different location. You must be in a favourable mental state and environment when establishing your goals; otherwise, you may find yourself stagnant.”

When questioned about the necessity of distancing oneself from certain individuals in 2025, Molefe stressed that those who are naysayers or who belittle others should be the ones to be excluded.

“To realise your goals, you must possess courage. I often say that courage is the ability to transition from one failure to another without losing enthusiasm. The best way to maintain focus is to eliminate those who judge you based on superficial criteria.”
