The Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (POPCRU) has demanded that the infamous Facebook rapist Thabo Bester’s escape from the Mangaung prison be looked into and those responsible held accountable.
Bester earned the nickname “Facebook rapist” because he lured his female victims via social media before raping, robbing, and even killing one of them.
The rapist and murderer fled after allegedly attempting suicide by setting his cell on fire. The body that was discovered in the cell could not be identified as Bester through DNA testing.
“We believe that management should be held accountable, so inquiries need to start at the top there at the management level. Because they are required to have the tools necessary to monitor these private prisons under the Correctional Services Act 111 of 2018, the department of correctional services must also take this into consideration,” said POPCRU spokesperson Richard Mamabolo, who was speaking to media.
Bester is now being sought by the police. Anyone with information about Bester’s whereabouts is urged to come forward.
