The ANC may emerge from its 55th national conference held in Nasrec with 7 officials as opposed to the usual top six leaders.
As the lobbying for positions continues, a majority of provinces have apparently agreed to the creation of an additional post of a second deputy secretary general.
North West provincial chairperson Nono Maloyi confirmed exclusively to Newsnote that the province will be pushing for that in the congress.
“What I can tell you is that most of the provinces agree with that constitutional amendment. It will be presented at plenary, we’ll discuss it but we are hopeful that plenary will agree that we must have a second deputy secretary general”, said Maloyi.
A lobbyist from KZN also confirmed the province’s support for the idea of a second deputy in the secretariat. “There’s a lot that the ANC is not getting right because the engine, the secretariat is overwhelmed.
“There’s issues of admin there that are everyday matters, there’s politics and most importantly there’s campaigns. So its clear that two deputies are needed and of course there has to be a clear division of labour. So far all the other provinces are agreeing with this approach”, said the lobbyist.
The proposal was expected to be presented to delegates once the second day of congress got underway.
