The City of Tshwane has sought to assure residents that the President Steyn Bridge in Pretoria North is safe and intact.
This after a video taken by one of the residents went viral on social media showing cuts on the bottom pillars of the bridge, with a warning of a potential disaster.
The Mayor, Dr Nasiphi Moya, conducted an oversight visit at the bridge today, to allay resident’s fears.
“We were accompanied by city engineers to assess the bridge following fears raised by residents.
In February, the city conducted its assessment of the structure and concluded that it is safe.
We want to confirm that the cuts at the bottom of the pillars in the bridge, are the same cuts at the top, its part of the design.
It’s a German inspired designed bridge, it was built in the 50’s,” said Moya.
She however raised concern that some of the plates in the pillars have been stolen.
“What is concerning for us is that there are plates that criminals are taken out, and in the process are damaging the structure of the bridge.
We must repair the damage, and we would also request metro police to add the bridge as a hotspot,” cautioned the mayor.
She highlighted that the municipality would soon appoint an external contractor to assess the bridge.
