A 47-year-old man from Boschkop, Pretoria, accused of allegedly and intentionally infecting his 38-year-old girlfriend with HIV, has been granted R2,000 bail by the Pretoria Magistrates Court.
The man faces a charge of attempted murder following allegations that he concealed his HIV-positive status while the couple were in a relationship between October 2025 and June 2026.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), the accused allegedly told the woman that he was HIV-negative during their relationship.
The complainant reportedly discovered antiretroviral (ARV) medication in the accused’s bag on 26 June 2026 and confronted him.
NPA Gauteng spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana said the accused allegedly admitted that he was HIV-positive and claimed he had intentionally infected the woman because he did not want her to enter into a relationship with someone else.
The woman subsequently underwent an HIV test at a medical facility on 25 July 2026 and was informed that she had tested positive.
She reported the matter to police the following day, resulting in the accused’s arrest at their residence.
During the bail proceedings, the state did not oppose his release, with prosecutors indicating that he was not considered a flight risk.
The court subsequently found that it was in the interests of justice to grant bail of R2,000.
The matter has been postponed to 27 August 2026, when a regional court date is expected to be determined.
The allegations against the accused have not been proven in court.
