The Premier Soccer League (PSL) observed a moment of silence at Betway Premiership and Motsepe Foundation Championship matches in honour of victims of femicide and violent killings.
The tribute was observed at matches from Thursday night and is expected to continue throughout the weekend as the country grapples with a recent spate of violent crimes.
In a statement, the PSL said it had joined the nation in mourning those who had lost their lives.
“The PSL extends its heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of all those who have lost their lives during this difficult and painful time,” the league said.
The PSL said it was deeply saddened by violent crimes reported in recent times, as well as those that may have gone unreported.
The league also expressed hope that justice would be served.
The moment of silence came as police investigated a series of killings of women in Gauteng, with several bodies discovered in different parts of Ekurhuleni in recent weeks.
The latest discovery at the time was made in Dawn Park, Boksburg, where the body of a woman was found dumped in an open space, marking the ninth body.
Police had appealed to anyone with information that could assist the investigations to come forward.
The PSL said the tribute allowed players, officials and supporters to honour the victims and stand in solidarity with their families.
“May their souls repose peacefully,” the league said.
