In a significant diplomatic exchange, Russian President Vladimir Putin has briefed South African President Cyril Ramaphosa on the outcomes of his recent meeting with US President Donald Trump, as both leaders continue to seek a peaceful resolution to the ongoing war in Ukraine. The call, which took place on Monday, highlights South Africa’s active role in the global diplomatic landscape, particularly amidst the escalating tensions between Russia and Ukraine.

The unusually prestigious dialogue comes on the heels of President Ramaphosa’s concerted efforts for peace, which included direct conversations with both Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The South African leader’s engagement not only underscores his commitment to diplomatic resolution but also his unique position as one of the few world leaders with the ear of both parties involved in the conflict.

According to a statement from the Russian embassy, President Putin shared the key outcomes of the talks held with Trump in Alaska during their phone conversation. Ramaphosa expressed strong support for ongoing diplomatic initiatives aimed at resolving the Ukraine crisis, reaffirming his dedication to supporting peace efforts on the continent.

“The two presidents reaffirmed their shared commitment to further expanding the comprehensive strategic partnership between Russia and South Africa and working closely together within international frameworks,” the embassy reported.

President Ramaphosa’s office echoed this sentiment, highlighting his appreciation for Putin’s insights and emphasising the critical need for compromises on vital issues to pave the way for lasting peace between Russia and Ukraine. “The President underscored the need for more compromise on key issues for lasting peace to be attained between Russia and Ukraine,” the statement read.

Historically, South Africa’s stance on the conflict has been one of non-alignment, although the government has encountered criticism for perceived ties to Russia, given historical connections to South Africa’s liberation movement. However, these allegations have consistently been met with denial from the government, maintaining that no evidence has substantiated any supposed bias.

Until Trump’s recent engagement, Ramaphosa has uniquely positioned South Africa as a leading player in the quest for peace by facilitating communication between the conflicting nations. His recent diplomatic rounds have included phone calls with both Putin and Zelenskyy, marking a pivotal role in international diplomacy during this turbulent period.
