US Secretary of State Marco Rubio addressed the need for Qatar to continue its mediating efforts in the ongoing Gaza conflict during his visit to Jerusalem on Monday. This appeal comes at a critical juncture, as Arab leaders convene in Doha to respond to a recent Israeli assault that has not only escalated violence but has also drawn widespread condemnation.

Qatar, a key US ally that has been instrumental in facilitating discussions between Israel and the militant group Hamas, found itself on the defensive last week following an Israeli attack on its capital. This strike aimed at Hamas leaders residing in Doha sparked outrage in the Gulf state, highlighting the tenuous balance of diplomacy in the region.

Rubio, standing alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, expressed optimism that Qatar could assist in achieving significant goals: the release of 48 hostages being held in Gaza, disarmament of Hamas, and the establishment of a better future for the Palestinian inhabitants. “We’re going to continue to encourage Qatar to play a constructive role in that regard,” he asserted.

Netanyahu, meanwhile, remains resolute in his stance, indicating that more military action aimed at Hamas leaders is possible. “I do not rule out further strikes on Hamas leaders wherever they are,” he stated, revealing Israel’s uncompromising approach in the face of mounting international criticism over the violence and humanitarian crises emerging from the ongoing conflict.

As diplomatic discussions unfold in Jerusalem and Doha, the situation on the ground in Gaza continues to deteriorate. Israeli military operations persist, resulting in numerous civilian casualties. Local health authorities reported the deaths of at least 16 Palestinians due to airstrikes targeting residences and temporary shelters. The destruction of a 16-floor building in Gaza City has raised alarms, as Israeli forces declared the structure a hub for “terrorist infrastructure” while warnings for civilians to evacuate were issued just prior to the strike.

Rubio’s support for Israel is unwavering, particularly as the country faces increasing isolation on the global stage. Diplomatic negotiations thus far have shown little sign of addressing the horrific human toll; more than 64,000 people have died in Gaza since the onset of hostilities in October 2023, triggered by an attack from Hamas that killed 1,200 Israelis and took 251 hostages.

Compounding the crisis, the humanitarian situation in Gaza is reaching critical levels. Reports from the territory’s health ministry indicate that malnutrition and starvation have claimed the lives of at least 425 individuals, including 145 children, with the spectre of hunger looming over displaced families. Hundreds of thousands are reportedly fleeing their homes, while the international community calls attention to forced mass displacement as a grave violation of humanitarian rights.

The leadership summit in Doha aims to send a resolute message against Israeli military actions, warning that such strikes could unravel regional coexistence efforts. One Palestinian resident reflected the skepticism many hold towards these diplomatic initiatives. “We have never placed much hope in Arab leaders and their summits,” Ahmed Nemer, aged 45, expressed. The sentiments highlight a deep-rooted cynicism within the Palestinian populace regarding external intervention and the effectiveness of Arab solidarity.
