Police in the North West have made one of the biggest drugs bust, when they intercepted a huge transportation of drugs estimated to be over R37 million in Zeerust on Wednesday afternoon. The drugs were found following a police raid of a vehicle that was believed to be heading to Johannesburg from Zambia through the Kopfontein Border Post near Zeerust.

The North West MEC for Community Safety and Transport Management Wessels Morweng has applauded the police swift action for intercepting the drugs and the arrest of the two occupants of the vehicle, a Tanzanian and Zambian nationals respectively. Speaking on You FM Newshour with Motlhaping Modise last night, Morweng said that this will help regain the trust of communities on members of the South African police service, SAPS.

“The people have given us a clear mandate that MEC we are losing confidence in the SAPS to do something, the drugs are prevalent they’re all over in our communities, it can’t be business as usual with all the resources that we have as government. These drugs keep on coming into the country, something should be done, now we came with a good strategy to make sure that we nip this problem in the bud, and it has yielded the result this the biggest drug bust worth R37 million comprising crystal meth,” said Morweng.

The MEC warned that a comprehensive investigation will be launched to determine how the drugs managed to pass unnoticed through the Kopfontein border post into the country.“It’s an open intelligence that someone must have been involved, I can say that with confidence, and you can also see that, a listener at home can see that someone was involved. That is one thing we must put out there that indeed someone was involved, we don’t need to hide anything so that we appear smart before the people, the people are not fools,” remarked Morweng.

In addition, Morweng emphasized that heads will roll, and those found to have aided the drug smugglers will be dealt with.“Now what is key is that there should be consequence management the first question is that when they’re (drugs) in Zeerust, they’re already in the country and the fundamental question is how they got into the country. That for the investigation to expose, and I can tell you one of the authorities must have been involved,” highlighted the MEC. He vowed that he’ll fight the prevalence of the scourge of drugs in the province.“Drugs are amongst those priority crimes that I have put at the top of my agenda, after illegal mining and gender-based violence. Drugs are prevalent and in Mahikeng its worse, in Rustenburg it’s out of control. They’re sold as if people are selling fat cakes people no longer fear authorities, they do as they please. But I can assure you and the people of the North West that we will deal with drugs in this province,” concluded Morweng.
